WHAT IS A NURDLE?!!
Nurdles are plastic pellets about the size of a lentil (2-3mm). They are used by industry to make many of our plastic products. The pellets are easily spilled at any point during production, transport or processing. Thousands of tonnes (equating to many billions of pellets) may be lost to seas each year from accidental spills. Like other microplastics, once at sea they can cause harm to marine life.
WHY JOIN THE HUNT?
The information you gather over this weekend will be used to show industry and decision makers exactly how widespread nurdle pollution is. The data that our nurdle hunters collect has proven vital in helping us raise awareness around this pressing issue.
HOW DO I TAKE PART?
Pick a beach. Any sandy beach will do. This can include freshwater lakes and river banks. Look for nurdles, and report back what you found. They can be difficult to spot, so use our online tips to help you get started.
For this event, however, we are doing things a bit differently, we still want you to record how many nurdles you are finding but we would like to hear what colours you find too! We’d like to know:
- Where you were searching
- How many people were hunting
- How long you were hunting
- How many nurdles you found
- NEW* What was the most common colour of nurdle you are finding?
- NEW* What is the second most common colour of nurdle you are finding?
- NEW* What was the third most common colour of nurdle you are finding?
The “colours” we are looking for are:
BLUE
GREEN
YELLOW
RED
PURPLE
ORANGE
BLACK (yes, we know it is a tone)
WHITE/CLEAR (see above...)
