WHEN?

2nd - 5th June 2017

WHERE?

A beach near you! We're looking for as many parts of Europe to be covered as possible...

Yes, that includes land-locked countries! Nurdles have been spotted on fresh-water lakes and river banks.

WHAT IS A NURDLE?!!

Nurdles are plastic pellets about the size of a lentil (2-3mm). They are used by industry to make many of our plastic products. Accidental spillage can lead to them being lost to the environment, and many end up washed up on beaches...

Explore the left menu bar to find out more.

WHY SHOULD WE HUNT?

Thousands of tonnes of pellets are thought to be lost to European seas each year through accidental spills that aren't cleaned up properly. That equates to many billions of pellets annually. Yet the problem remains under the radar for much of the general public and decision makers.

We need your help to gather evidence of this pollution problem, showing how widespread these pellets are — and how countries must work together to stop this source of microplastic for good!

The information will be fed into the upcoming European Commission investigation and public consultation into microplastics, which opens in June—see www.eumicroplastics.com

HOW?

Pick a beach. Any sandy beach will do! Keep a close look-out for nurdles, and tell us what you’ve found. If you've never hunted before, check out our tips for HOW TO HUNT.  We’d like to know:
1. Where you were searching
2. How many people were hunting
3. How long you were hunting
4. How many nurdles you found

5. *new* Did you spot any biobeads? These are a subtly different type pellet - use our NURDLE ID CHART to identify them, and avoid any red herrings.

You can submit your results here on this webpage from 2nd June onwards.
